America. That title alone, audacious, precise, full of grief and fire. Garrett brought to Aubin's Studio something that only a filmmaker of her gifts could: a visual language so original, so formally brave, that it demands a new way of watching and a new way of reckoning with this country.
Her work asks what images owe to the people they represent. It's a question Aubin has been asking since 1996. She arrived at it from a completely distinct direction, and enriched everything.
She's one of the most important filmmakers working today, and she made a film with us. We don't take that lightly. We hold it with immense pride.
